Latest News

Too many announcements?

The gods have whispered in our ear and told us that there may be too many session announcements.

So we will try to reduce these and not repeatedly remind players about upcoming events.

Instead please look at the upcoming event notices on the notice-boards - and at the club TV slideshow to see what is coming up!

ABF Aug 2019 Newsletter

Check out the latest ABF Newsletter (Aug 2019).

It includes a huge range of material of interest to bridge players, particularly but not only for those at the competitive end of the spectrum.

What we know about Alzheimers

"...maintaining physical, social and brain health is an important component of reducing dementia risk, which all Australians can implement in their daily lives. Learning a new language, picking up bridge, travelling and going back to study are ideal examples as they incorporate brain challenges and increase social engagement, which are both important for dynamically engaging the brain." (bolding added)

From an article "What causes Alzheimer’s disease? What we know, don’t know and suspect" by Yen Ying Lim and Rachel Buckley, published in The Conversation on 2 Jun 2017, and republished on 3 Aug 2019.

Last call for yellow session cards

This is reminder and last call for any remaining yellow session cards that past directors and other helpers may have accumulated and are not going to use before the end of August.

That is our end of financial year and we need to know our liability on these session cards to complete our financial accounts. Read all about the stocktake and replacement of yellow session cards for new blue ones in this earlier article from our Treasurer.

NOTE - this has nothing to do with green PPVs (prepaid vouchers)!

Masterpoints in August and September

Green masterpoints for these two months will be submitted as is normal but the red points for August and September club events will be delayed until the end of October.

Cassandra Mitchell – the masterpoint secretary – will be away, but rest assured, the red points will come in time. Often these points are delayed in being uploaded by months and months because of various factors outside of my control so this isn’t unusual.

If anyone wants to volunteer to learn how to process masterpoints for the club, please contact me on 0421 764 300 (NOTE: You do not need to be a director to process points). I leave for the United States around 21 August.

2019 Swiss Pairs Congress wrap

Our Swiss Pairs Congress was a great success, in large part due to the huge contributions from the convener Cassandra Mitchell (see her wrap below!) and a number of other key volunteers before and on the day.

Have a look at the photos that Cassandra took on our Facebook Group.

Check the full results. Congratulations to Jocelyn Bertram and Lyn Smith as the most successful Peninsula pair in the Open field and to Ray Hurst and Nerida Gillies who were runners-up in the Restricted field.

Kitchen Bridge success

Our first day on Sunday 14 July was a lot of fun - six tables, jazz and BYO wine. See the photos on our Facebook group.

We'll do it again one Sunday each month depending on other club commitments and the next session will be 18 August at 3pm.

Most tables remained with their original four but a couple of tables swapped over half way so we are quite flexible, whatever works for you. Hopefully we can accommodate all comers, singles, pairs or foursomes.

Congratulations Sandie!

Congratulations! Due to the efforts of Sandie Rooke, Peninsula Bridge Club now has another ABF Accredited Teacher. Your club will be able to display the Accredited Club certificates.

By completing the ABF Teaching Accreditation Program and becoming an ABF Accredited Teacher Club, you have demonstrated commitment to best practice and continuous improvement.

Well done and keep up the great work.

Regards
Allison Stralow (ABF President) and Joan Butts (ABF National Teaching Coordinator)
