Australia Wide Novice Pairs

There was a great turnout for the Australia Wide Novice Pairs event on Friday 26 May, with 48 members (24 pairs) from Peninsula Bridge Club taking part.

Congratulations to the winners in our part of the event: N/S Sue Evershed and John Simmonds, and E/W Keith Trevallion and Grahame Elith.  Check the full results on the Peninsula website and the Australia wide results will be available in due course.

Thanks to director John Rogers.

PS - Also thanks to Ray Hurst for acting as convener – because naturally he didn’t thank himself!  And to Heidi Colenbrander and Susan Jensen for the photos - several of which will appear on the club TV slideshow in the near future.

State Open Teams winners

Ten teams battled for the State Open Teams qualifier event run over three Thursdays in May. Directed by Brian Soutter, each team played 10 boards against each other team in a nine match round robin.

Winning were Alan Davies, Vivien Eldridge, David Farmer and Catherine Whiddon, ahead of Jocelyn Bertram, Faye Carnovale, Moya Chappell and Chris Duggin, who just pipped Carmel Bourke, Vona Hadfield, Patricia Lacey and Hans van Weeren. You can see the full results and hand records on the Peninsula website.

The top teams earn free entry into the State Open Teams Sydney Metropolitan Final on Sunday 17 September at the NSWBA. Other teams can compete in this final at their own expense.

Swiss Pairs - Tue 16 May

The first Swiss Pairs held as part of new Tuesday "Challenge" night was fortunate to have Derrick Browne as our guest expert. Derrick gave a great pre-session talk on "Carding combat: Fake news and alternative facts" exploring signalling tactics. You can check the hands and notes Derrick provided.

The battle for the Swiss chocolates was intense. The top five pairs finished within a 5 VP range. But someone had to win, and with a great last round, Catherine Whiddon and David Farmer pipped Suzanne Cole and Susan Jensen by 1 VP, with Derrick Browne and Michael Draper and Sandie Rooke and Alan Davies tying for third, just ahead of Anne Crothers and Anita Kite. Check the full results and hand records - also on Pianola.

There was a great turnout of members for the Bridge for Brain Research charity event on Monday 1 May.

There were more than 21 tables playing, as well as a raffle and a lovely afternoon tea of member's cakes and other creations.

See the photo gallery (thanks to photographer Heidi Colenbrander) and the results (thanks to director Sue Falkingham).

Peninsula pair wins NSW State Restricted Championship

Hans Van Weeren and Peter Clarke won the 2017 NSW Restricted State Championship. Marieta Borthwick and Annegrete Bach Kolding came fourth in the NSW State Novice Championship with Heidi Colenbrander and Ray Hurst just behind them coming in sixth place. Both events were played at the Southern Highlands Bridge Club on the weekend of 29-30 April.

The matchpoint pairs events were played over four sessions - check out the NSWBA coverage and the full results for the Restricted State Championships and for the Novice State Championships.

Peter and Hans had an exciting fourth session with the pair coming second having a great last session but just not doing quite well enough.

NSWBA profiles our Teams Congress

The May NSWBA eCongress newsletter profiles the club's Swiss Teams Congress held at Peninsula Bridge Club in March.

Annegrete Kolding provided the NSWBA with expanded coverage of the event accompanied with the photos that are displayed in the profile's photo gallery. Annegrete is the channel coordinator of the various NSWBA and Australian Bridge Federation's publication options - please contact her if you think you would like to discuss these options or have some information that could be suitably profiled in one or more of the NSWBA's or ABF's publications.

This is part of an expanded emphasis on streamlining and expanding the internal and external communication channels available to the club.

Thanks for Verl - Sat 29 Apr

Members flocked to commemorate and thank our wonderful Chief Director, Verl Lawrence, on Saturday 29 April, after she announced her retirement from directing. As well as holding the role of Chief Director for the past 17 years, Verl has held almost all of the office-bearer positions in the Club.

Our president, Sarah Young, thanked Verl on the Club's behalf and presented her with a floral tribute. She also announced in honour of Verl and her husband's past contributions to the club a new competition, to be called the Lawrence Competition, to start in June on Tuesday nights.

Verl thanked the club for the recognition and more importantly for the key role it had been in her life and the support she had received over the years.
